2011 Coach Training

All coaches are required to attend additional training sessions, offered in 1.5-hour blocks early in the season. These sessions will be held on the Chelsea soccer fields and focus on techniques, fun games, and different approaches to the game. Though there is no fee for these clinics, you must register for them 48 hours in advance. Soccer Chelsea strongly encourages you to attend more than one session, since this training will significantly help you to coach your team.

ARSO Coach Certification Weekends

All Division 1 and 2 coaches at levels U9 to U18 are required to have community coach certification (National Coaching Certification Program). There are three levels of certification, based on the age of the children being coached: Child (ages 6 to 9), Youth (ages 10 to 13), and Senior (ages 14 and older).

Only Division 3 coaches are not required to have this level of certification. Soccer Chelsea strongly supports this training, because it improves the skill level of our soccer players. Certification courses are held over a weekend (Friday evening, Saturday or Sunday) and have both written and practical components. The cost per course is approximately $85, which Soccer Chelsea will help to pay (the full fee is covered for returning coaches, and 50% is covered for new coaches, with the possibility of retroactive reimbursement for coaches returning the following year). Soccer Chelsea will reimburse the complete cost of a course over a two year period. If coaches take a course two years in a row, each course will be funded at 50%, with the possibility of reimbursement over subsequent years.

For those of you who would prefer to take the coach certification course in English, ARSO will offer one english "Child" course and one "Youth" course, as indicated on the dates below:

1 - Child / Enfants – U5 à U10 - May 28, 2011

2 - Youth / Jeunes – U10 à U14 - May 14-15, 2011

There must be at least 15 participants to run the course, so if you're interested, please register with ARSO ASAP!

Training Goalkeepers

Coaches play a vital role in the development of our Chelsea goalkeepers.  In order to be effective, coaches need the proper tools.  Through a coaches training session in the spring and goal keeping drills and techniques available through the Coaches Corner, coaches will be able to teach their goalies basic skills and integrate these skills into their practices.

Youth Coach Training Program - Postponed until early May

Are you U15 or over, interact well with younger players and have a passion for soccer? Sign up for our Youth Coaches in Training (YCT) program. This 4 hour training session will consist of a combination of theory, drill practice planning and demonstrations.

1. Session 1 - Theory (exact date to be determined by participants ): One hour of theory on soccer terminology, age appropriate drills, and presentation skills.
2. Session 2 - Skill Demonstrations and practice training : Phase 1: On-field training session with peers (first hour). Phase 2: Youth coaches will assist in presenting player clinics for Spring Camp (second hour).
3. Session 3 - On-field Training : Coach Training session, in conjunction with beginner adult coaches.
4. Season Assignment: Youth coaches will be recommended, by the Technical Director, to assist with a particular age level/team for the season, based on identified skills. Youth Coach will function as a second assistant coach and will focus on technical skills. Responsibilities for discipline, coordination etc will be the responsibility of the Adult head coach.

This commitment is volunteer-based and credit hours will be given for students who require volunteer time for school-based requirements. Youth coaches who demonstrate an aptitude for coaching may be recommended for paid coaching opportunities in future.
