Desrochers Wed, 25 Aug 2010 01:48:20 +0000) Soccer Chelsea, in collaboration with ARSO (our regional soccer association) welcomed 32 teams of players between 5 and 10 years old to La Fête du Soccer on Saturday, August 14th. Chelsea, Maniwaki, Hull, Gatineau, Masson Angers, Cantley and Alymer teams participated in this event. The kids all played their hearts out in a mini-tournament where each team played three or four games. It was a “just-for-the-love-of-the-game” event, where no scores were kept and all players received gorgeous medals.

The regional Jeux Techniques competition attracted over 30 skilled players between the ages of 9 and 12, who demonstrated their abilities in juggling, heading, passing, shooting, shuttle run and dribbling.

Congratulations to Neal Fahey, who did a terrific job representing the U12 Chelsea boys and to our U12 girls, who swept the medals in this category: Sarah McGlashan, Gold, Brittany McGlashan, Silver and Melissa Chalifoux, Bronze. Sarah will represent the Outaouais in the provincial competition in Laval on September 5th – good luck, Sarah!

A special thanks to the organizers of the event, Norbert Chalifoux and Betsy Murphy, who recruited teams, developed schedules and volunteers, and to their team of U12F Lions parents and players who helped set up the inflatables, ran the canteen and helped man the bouncy games. Our age-group coordinators, Blake Henderson (U5/6), Victoria Mitchell (U8 Boys) and Kim Dufour (U8 Girls) did a superb job recruiting and organizing their teams. Thanks also to all of our volunteers, especially to our youth volunteers, Jack, Alexia, Annelise, Ryan, Lexi, Chole, Kira, LaurieAnn, Joanie, Julien and Jasmin, who ensured everyone had a fun, safe time bouncing on the inflatables. And finally, thanks to Tim Rumball, our head ref, who once again led his troop of young refs, including some recruits from La Peche and Cantley.

Special recognition to l’Association Regionale de Soccer de l’Outaouais, who embraced the theme of “Celebrating World Cup Soccer in Africa” and borrowed world-cup flags from ASH (thanks, Hull), demonstrated their artistic talent by painting animals for photo cut-outs, recruited teams and sponsors and ensured the smooth operation of the day itself – we couldn’t have done it without you!

It was a gorgeous day, with sunny skies and strong winds, and with the flags of the World Cup countries unfurled in the wind and “Wave the Flag” blasting over the loud speakers, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect day for our last major event of the 2010 season.

S.
